In Sincerely Seeking God, You Will Find God

Let’s discuss what it takes to find God in your life. Although, as they say, it may start with a single step, it doesn’t end there. It’s a journey — seeking God is an ongoing process; it’s a lifelong pursuit.

Finding God isn’t cheap. Knowing God isn’t cheap either.

The act of seeking is a way to test whether someone really needs you or not. God doesn’t make himself available to people easily, cheaply, carelessly, or on their own terms. The search for God is like searching for valuable treasure. To find it, you need to search beyond the usual length, width, height, and depth. The good news is that the process of seeking God increases our appreciation and value for Him. This is a worthwhile investment now and will yield fruitful returns in the future. It’s vitally important to know that God prefers to be sought out of your own free will. God searches for those who will seek Him:

The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. (Psalms 14:2 (NKJV)

Here are some of the questions for anyone considering this journey, this quest:

Is there a reason why seeking God is so significant?
If we do not seek God, then how will we be able to know Him?
Without seeking God, how can we discover what life entails?

It is impossible to live the life God envisions for us if we do not seek Him. It’s that simple.
In today’s world, the times in which we currently live, humanity is lost in its search for God. Humanity is lacking in its search for God. More and more, people have disconnected, detached, and distanced themselves from God and anything that has to do with Him. We have turned aside from our Maker, gone our separate ways, and lived our own lives. None, by nature, are found to be engaged in seeking God. It takes God’s mercy, grace, and help to empower one to seek Him. As it is written:

“There is none righteous, no, not one. 11 There is none who understands. There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside. They have together become unprofitable. There is none who does good, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10–12 NKJV)

People feel deserted by God not wanted, not accepted, and unable to reach God. The good news is God is in search of them. Luckily, for all of us, it is a symbiotic relationship — for God “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,” (1 Timothy 2:4–6 NKJV)

Ezekiel 34:16 (NKJV) “I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the strong, and feed them in judgment.”

Seeking God in the hope of finding God is the greatest desire anyone can pursue, and the most meaningful decision anyone can make.

So that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one-off us; (Acts 17:27 NKJV)

Do you know God is searching to see who will seek Him? If God does not help us,

“There is none who seeks after Him.” Romans 3:11.

However: It is God’s true desire for people to seek him, rather than demand him. He longs for us to find him so He can get closer to us, and we can get to know him on a personal level. The Bible repeatedly tells us that God wants each of us to chase after Him. God will not force Himself upon us. Instead, He allows us to see a glimpse of Himself in creation in order for us to be interested and motivated to seek Him. One tremendous resource available to all of us is the Good Book itself. We can learn more about God when we diligently study the Bible that speaks of Him. It is for everyone and anyone to seek God. All people present and future should seek God, and not only those from the past. Newbies welcome! All are welcome to seek Him, whether they are Jews or gentiles.

Are you truly interested in seeking God? If so, you must ask yourself — how committed are you to seeking God? God is searching to work with anyone who will seek after Him. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you have done, God wants you to seek after Him. Whoever draws near to God, He will likewise draw near to that individual. (James 4:8 NKJV).

“God desires people to seek after him, not demand. God calls for people to seek after him not compel.” — Wisdom Grace

In the Scriptures, we are instructed to seek the Lord early and earnestly. It is now, and for this life only, that we have the opportunity and chance to seek God. Take action now and don’t waste time. It must be done with seriousness, eagerness, and commitment. There is no one more valuable in the universe (both in the heavens and on earth) than God, and He is worth your time, effort, and investment.

Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. (Isaiah 55:6 NKJV)

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1 NKJV)

I will return again to My place till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face; In their affliction, they will earnestly seek Me.” (Hosea 5:15 (NKJV)

It is not far to seek God — He is not out of reach. The God we know is not hiding from us. Through the grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God is accessible and available. But be advised — finding God is not cheap. To seek God is a life-changing decision only you can make and must be one made with total commitment. This is an extremely significant decision in your life, so don’t delay, postpone, or procrastinate it. For those who desire a life with God now and in the hereafter, now is the time to “seek the LORD and live” (Amos 5:6 NKJV).

What does it Mean to Seek in a Biblical Sense?

Let’s define briefly what it means “to seek” both in the Hebraic and Hellenic senses.

to seek — verb. to try to get or reach something one desires.
to search (look for) — verb. to try to locate, discover, or establish the existence of something.
to seek diligently — verb. to try to get, reach, or find something diligently or in an exact manner.
to seek out — verb. to look for a specific person or thing, whether physical or abstract.
to be sought after — verb. to be located or discovered or have one’s existence established.
to be sought — verb. to be an object of a search or inquiry.
to be sought (state) — verb. to be or become that which is looked for.
to seek (ask) — verb. to inquire for (something).
to affect — verb. to have an effect upon.

Seeking refers to a search for something that is either lost, or desired. It carries a sense of applied effort toward reaching a specific goal, according to the Logos Bible Definition. Seeking is a persistent and consistent pursuit that requires both heart and mind. When we say, “seek God”, it means to search wholeheartedly and diligently for God, to stand in His presence constantly, and to ask about His will with regard to a given matter.

What does it Mean, “Seeking God”?

The concept of seeking God has a wide range of settings and applications. There should be a holistic approach to seeking God. To seek God goes beyond just inquiring from Him — more so, it’s a conscious decision to be in the space of God’s presence continually. Seeking God is acknowledging God by inviting His input and influence into your life. It involves knowing God’s will, words, and ways in all areas of life: spiritually, physically, mentally, socially, relationally, professionally, and morally.
The act of seeking God is a process of closing the gap(s) between you and God. By seeking God, you are bringing yourself closer to Him. There are different stages of growth and dimensions of experience when one is in the process of seeking God. In a nutshell, seeking God consists of an individual desiring interestingly, deciding intentionally, dedicating uninterruptedly, and determining to stand before God (His presence) and inquire of Him (His purpose) in every facet of life every day, forever.

Seeking His Face and Will

Seeking God in this context involves seeking His presence and purpose. Firstly, we seek his “face”, which means His presence. Secondly, we seek his “will” which means His purpose. Seeking the face of God is to stand before His presence. Seeking the will of God is inquiring from the Lord, concerning His purpose towards us and the world at large.

Seeking Him with your Heart and Mind

God calls to be sought after with all your heart and mind. Seeking God starts in the heart and sets in the mind. A person’s heart and mind are the foundation and basis of their quest for God. It comes from a place of desire and a decision from the heart. Seeking God is a conscious, intentional process — one which requires your heart and mind to be willing and wholehearted. It is essential that your heart be willing, and that you give with your whole heart.

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13 NKJV)

Both the Old and New Testaments instruct us to set our hearts and minds to seek God. It is a conscious, committed and continuous fixing, and focusing, of your mind’s attention and your heart’s affection for God and things that relate to God (things above).

As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever. 1 Chronicles 28:9 NKJV)

1 Chronicle 22:19 (NKJV) 19 Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God. Therefore, arise and build the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the holy articles of God into the house that is to be built for the name of the LORD.”

Colossians 3:1–2 (NKJV) 1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

The Process of Seeking God — A Conscious Choice, Commitment and Continuity

Seeking is a decided, active, and continuous process of pursuing God’s face (His presence) and will (His purpose) on life matters. Seeking God shouldn’t be incidental but intentional — a bold, life-altering step.

Desire

Seeking God must spring from a desire in your heart. When God presents Himself to you, he will spark an interest in you to desire Him. It is that interest which leads to the desire to pursue further the journey of seeking the Lord God, who does not demand that we seek him, but who desires that we do so. Notice again, it is a symbiotic relationship. To seek God, you must first desire Him in your heart’s affection. In showing interest in God, you will make a firm decision to pursue the process.
One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple. (Psalms 27:4 (NKJV)

Decision

Showing an interest in seeking God will lead you to a deliberate and firm decision to pursue the process. It is a conscious and purposeful choice we must make to seek God — a decision that you will never regret in your life. It’s a decision that will change your life for the better, and forever. Most importantly, it is a decision that will reconnect you back to your Creator and bring you everlasting communion with Him.

Psalms 27:4 (NKJV) 4 One thing I have desired of the LORD,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD,
And to inquire in His temple.

1 Chronicle 28:9 (NKJV) 9 “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.

Direction

When one has made a firm decision of their own volition, seeking God becomes a life-altering change in direction which leads to a relationship with God. Choosing to seek only God changes the direction of your life from seeking everything else — nothing else will be as important to you, ever again.

Devotion

The next step you should take is to devote yourself to God now that you’ve decided to seek his face and will. Seeking God demands your commitment and consecration. You must focus your mind’s attention on God and direct your heart’s affections to Him alone in order to find Him.

Jeremiah 29:13–14 (NKJV) 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, says the LORD, and I will bring you back from your captivity.

Diligence

Now that you have devoted your life to seeking God, it requires ongoing effort on your part to engage in spiritual activities. These will attract and invite the presence of God.

I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me. (Proverbs 8:17 NKJV)

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV) 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Discipline

In order to be effective, your commitment to seek God’s presence requires discipline. Seeking God requires daily discipline to stand in His face (His presence) of God, and in all your ways acknowledge his will (His purpose) to be done in all matters in your life (See Proverbs 3:6 NKJV). It is a matter of consistency and concentration.

Psalm 63: 1 (NKJV) 1 O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.

Determination

It is a demand placed on you to exercise persistence in your search for God. This journey towards God is not one we will be able to achieve easily or causally. The Bible states,

“from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.” (Matthew 11:12 NKJV)

By deciding and determining to draw closer to God willingly and wholeheartedly, you will bridge the distance between you and God, and bridge the differences between you.

Hindrances to Seeking God

There are several obstacles in the way of seeking God; highest among them: Pride and unprofitable ways. Pride can prevent us from seeking the Lord. The best way to overcome pride is to go before God in humility. Seeking God through occult practices is absolutely forbidden.

Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. (Leviticus 19:31 NKJV)

Here is a list of unprofitable ways to go about seeking God: wrongfully, blindly, deceitfully, falsely, selfishly, religiously, and pretentiously.

It will be a sad quest to seek God wrongfully and end up not finding Him at all. There are two ways why we go about seeking God:

First, we go about seeking God out of religiosity meaning we serve God in hope of being recognized and appearing spiritually. Such a way is unfruitful.
Secondly, we can seek God out of a desire to have a personal relationship. An approach like this is fruitful and enriching.

Seek God not just for what He can do, but also for an intimate relationship with Him. The right motive for seeking God is because you want to be in a personal relationship with Him.

The Consequences of not Seeking God

“Seeking God comes with conditions (meaning seeking him wholeheartedly and with diligence), and not seeking God has consequences.” — Wisdom Grace

A person who chooses to seek God willingly and wholeheartedly does so for their own benefit, both now and for eternity. Those who refuse to seek God do so at their own peril, both here and in the afterworld. Seeking God is not a want in your life; it’s actually the most critical need in your life (see Matthew 6:33 NKJV). Consequently, when we refer to needing something or someone, it’s something we must have or be fulfilled in order to live, and we can’t live without it. When we talk about wanting something or someone, it’s a choice, and most times it can’t affect our lives, with or without. Whether we choose to seek God or not, our choice will have an eternal impact.

The Outcome of Seeking God

There is a condition of finding God when you seek God. You will find God if you seek him wholeheartedly, with your heart and mind set on him, and diligently, meaning with a level of effort on your part. Seeking God requires the following investments from your end: your will, heart, time, effort, attention, and resources.

Know for certain that seeking God is not in vain (Isiah 45:19 NKJV) but rewarding. (Hebrews 11:6 NKJV)

The goal of seeking is finding, not just inquiring. There are two great promises to those who will seek God. God promises to be found by those who set their hearts and minds to seek him sincerely.

Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. (Isaiah 55:6 NKJV)

God also promises a reward to those who will diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 NKJV)

When we seek God wholeheartedly, diligently, and truthfully, we will surely find Him. And when we find God, we will have God forever:

“for He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 NKJV).

Finding God is having God in our lives, which makes God our greatest reward. In addition to God himself, we have everything else that pertains to life and godliness. In God, we can experience happiness, peace, satisfaction, and meaning in this life and in the next. This should be our priority in life, to:

“seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 NKJV)

Finally, seeking God is a lifelong, meaningful, and impactful journey. The fact that we have found God does not mean that we have figured everything out about Him. We will never reach a point where we stop seeking God. God is indiscernible, indescribable, unsearchable, inexhaustible, immense, immeasurable, and much more. To seek God is to lose yourself in finding Him, so you can start an everlasting relationship with Him. Therefore,

“seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence (face) continually (forever)!” (Psalms 105:4 (ESV).

Through daily seeking God, God will continually reveal Himself to you.
