1:6 – There came a man, sent from God. The “man, sent from God” was John the Baptist. He was the forerunner (messenger) sent from God. In John 5: 35, John the Baptist was called … the burning and shining lamp.

1:7 – The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him. John the Baptist was commissioned by God to testify about Jesus, who was the promised Messiah, the Son of God. The Old Testament Law said “At the mouth of two witnesses, or the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established (Deuteronomy 19:15). Jesus said, I am one who testifies (witnesses) about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me (8:17–18).

1:8–10 – John the Baptist… was not the light. The interpreter’s Bible says the true light that enlightens might “mean the genuine as opposed to the false, or the eternally real in distinction from the transient (temporary) …” W. E. Vine says, the light in John 1: 9 is “the Lord Jesus as the illuminator (enlightener) of men. John 3: 19 says, This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.

1:12–13 – But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children … We can’t earn the right to become God’s children. It is a gift from God.
