John 1:1–5 (English Version)

1:1 – In the beginning was the Word (the Logos). In the first chapter of Genesis, there are several times the book says God said… and it was so (read Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 29). The Word was with God. The Word was indistinguishable from God.

1:2 – The same was at the beginning with God. Hebrews 1:1–2 says, God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds.

1:3 – All things were made through him… In the Gospel of John, the subject matter is that Jesus is the eternal God. He was born of the Virgin Mary. He had a human genealogy. In reference to his Divinity, he had no genealogy.

1:4 – Revelation 4:11 says, Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed and were created (Revelation 4:11)! “All created life is an expression of that life-giving power eternally existent in the Logos (Word)). In him must go with may have eternal life, not with the believes” (The Interpreter’s Bible). In him was life, and the life was the light of men. “The light of men means the light which shines for men to give them the means of recognizing the giver of life” (The Interpreter’s Bible).

1:5 – The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it. 1 John 2:8 says, … because the darkness is passing away, and the true light already shines. “…The light still shines in the fellowship of the risen and ever-living Christ… The darkness… (is) the state of mind in which mankind fails to welcome the light” (The Interpreter’s Bible).
