Jeremiah 11:17–18 (NIV) 17 The LORD Almighty, who planted you, has decreed disaster for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused my anger by burning incense to Baal. 18 Because the LORD revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing.

In these verses, Jeremiah is speaking about a revelation from God regarding the people of Israel and Judah. He reveals that God has decreed disaster upon them due to their evil actions and idolatry. In verse 17, it is stated that “The Lord Almighty, who planted you, has decreed disaster for you because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused my anger by burning incense to Baal.” This verse conveys God’s judgment upon the people of Israel and Judah for their wickedness and idolatry. Despite being planted by God, they have turned away from Him and provoked His anger.

In verse 18, Jeremiah explains that he knew about the people’s sinful actions because the Lord revealed their plot to him. He mentions that at that time, God showed him what they were doing. This demonstrates God’s ability to know everything and His willingness to communicate with His chosen servants.

What is the original meaning of these verses? The original meaning of these verses is a warning to the people of Israel and Judah about the consequences of their disobedience and idolatry. God, through Jeremiah, is informing them of the impending disaster as a result of their actions.

What was God doing in these verses? God is revealing His judgment upon the people for their sinful behaviour. He is also demonstrating His omniscience by revealing their actions to Jeremiah.

How do we see man, and how do we see God’s character? These verses show that man is prone to disobedience and idolatry, leading to judgment from God. On the other hand, God’s character is portrayed as just and omniscient, holding His people accountable for their actions.

What is the relationship between God and Jeremiah? The relationship between God and Jeremiah is one of communication and revelation. God shares His plans and judgments with Jeremiah, using him as a messenger to convey His message to the people.

How can we apply this verse in our lives as Christian believers today? As Christian believers, we can apply these verses by recognizing the seriousness of sin and idolatry in our lives. We should heed God’s warnings and strive to live in obedience to Him.

What are some recommendations? The recommendation from these verses is to turn away from sin and idolatry, seeking repentance and obedience to God’s commands.

• Pray for a deeper understanding of God’s character and His desire for us to live in righteousness.
