Vibrant Hope: Hate Evil and Do Good
Thursday 7/18/2024
Amos 5:14–15 (NIV) 14 Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. 15 Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
In these verses, the prophet Amos is calling the people of Israel to turn away from evil and instead pursue goodness and justice. By doing so, they will receive God’s favour and mercy. Originally, the verse served as a call to the Israelites to repent from their sinful ways and return to God’s ways to avoid His judgment and obtain His mercy. The passage emphasizes the importance of leading a righteous life, detesting evil, embracing good, and upholding justice. It reveals God’s desire for His people to align their actions with His standards of righteousness.
As Christians today, we can apply this verse by seeking to do good, avoiding evil, loving what is right, and upholding justice in our lives and communities. This aligns with God’s desire for us to live in accordance with His will. We should strive to live in a way that reflects God’s character, seeking righteousness and justice in all aspects of our lives. This may involve standing up against injustice, helping those in need, and living a life that honours God. The passage reminds us that God desires His people to live in alignment with His values of goodness, justice, and righteousness in order to receive His favour and mercy.
Prayer Points:
- Pray for the strength and wisdom to seek good and hate evil in our lives.
- Ask God to help us uphold justice and righteousness in our interactions with others.
- Seek God’s mercy and grace as we strive to live according to His will.
